109 beautiful illustrations of a typical mid-nineteenth century Hampshire village.

Drawings are in pencil, chalk and wash and they depict everyday life featuring local villagers and houses, including Florence Nightingale’s home, Embley Park. In almost every case, the name of the householder or farm is given.

The amateur artist is unusual in depicting everyday life, such as a woman feeding chickens, children playing outside their school, pigs in a farmyard, labourers in a hayfield, the cherry and apple trees and beehives of the villagers, a camp-fire with a group of travellers, and the arrival of a coach and horses.

The identity of the artist is unknown. The provenance, through the family of the Revd William Henry Empson (vicar of Wellow from 1844) and the subject matter suggest that the artist was a member of Empson's family, possibly his mother in law, Mrs Mary Rawson.
