This course aims to support you to discover a range of opportunities available and apply for a job working in the Early Years Care and Education Sector. You will find out about the skills, values and attitudes required to work with children and young people and prepare to attend a mock interview to prepare you for a potential progression route into employment

Learning Goals:

  • Target your CV, application form or cover letter to a specific job description 
  • Be confident to prepare to attend an interview and answer values based interview questions using the STAR method
  • Create a Personal Development Plan to identify next steps in achieving employment, further training or volunteering using SMART targets
  • Identify the effects of stress and anxiety on the mind and body and explore ways to reduce those effects during interviews or other stressful situations
  • Name at least 2 types of unconscious bias and their possible effects in recruitment, employment and safeguarding children

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who want to discover a range of opportunities available and apply for a job working in the Early Years Care and Education Sector. You will explore various routes into working in this sector and the qualifications required. You will find out about the skills, values and attitudes required to work with children and young people, build your confidence for interviews, and learn how to target your CV and cover letter to this rewarding sector.

Please note: Eligibility criteria applies and will be checked upon enrolment.

Course purpose: Preparation for employment

Previous knowledge or experience: A level of English comprehension sufficient to participate in class discussions, write a CV and answer questions. (Level 1)

How will I learn: We encourage supporting each other to learn in small groups through group discussion, individual online research and activities, written tasks and quizzes

How will I be assessed: There will be an informal phone conversation before the course to check English comprehension and IT compatibility. There is no formal assessment on the course material however, engagement in group discussions, completion of quizzes and written activities will help inform the tutor of where an individual may require additional support.

What shall I bring: Note book and pen. A laptop or tablet with a camera and MS Teams compatibility and good Wi-Fi connection (a phone is not sufficient for this course)

Next steps: ·Skills bootcamp in EYC, Teaching Assistant or Playwork delivered by Itchen College or other education providers. Volunteering at nurseries and schools, youth groups, Home Start / Best Start groups to gain experience

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
